ARTISTS / Amelie Scalercio

Amelie's work analyses the way in which a moment of destruction or death can linger or stretch out for an indeterminate period, through memory, vision and media, like a slow motion Mexican wave that just keeps waving in a closed circuit, denying any kind of end can occur.

Often realised in biro or pencil, her drawings emerge from a maze of seemingly haphazard lines to create images of faces hidden within mountains and scenery. Similarly in the current exhibition of oil paintings, subjects retreat from display in their depiction of moments of disguise. The paintings record destroyed pinatas (the remnants of frivolous violence), anthropomorphic doonas, lonely plants and an 'exotic' mask collection. All the works suggest loss, and in doing so evoke a sense of an unsettling withdrawl.

Amelie is a graduate of Masters of Fine Arts from Monash University and also holds a Bachelor of Education from Melbourne University. She has held several solo exhibitions exhibiting works made in collaboration with Marc Alperstein. She has also been included in groups exhibitions most recently including Beautiful Volcanoes: Poetic Regurgitations of History, Literature & Popular Culture, Monash University Faculty Gallery (2011); We now pause for technical difficulties, Sunshine and Grease, Melbourne (2010); and Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, Nellie Caston Gallery (2009). Her works are held in the collections of Monash University Faculty of Art and Design, MIRVAC, "Yarra's Edge", Melbourne and private collections in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. Amelie is also a teacher in the children’s programs at Art Encounters.
