ARTISTS / Helen Gibbins
Working across a diverse practice that includes drawing, sculpture, sound, and installation art, Helen Gibbins’ forthcoming exhibition at LOWRISE PROJECTS will run from 18 November to 17 December and feature hand illustrations that are curious depictions of imagined situations verging on the surreal as part of her ongoing series a scenario for perfect placement.
Helen’s recent illustration works are in part inspired by her ongoing involvement with the Melbourne International Animation Festival, a role which sees her watch over 1500 short animated films a year. There is also evident in these intimately scaled drawings imagined situations that recall artists including Bruegel, Hieronymus Bosch and the writing of Samuel Beckett.
‘My drawings tend to adopt an illustrative style to depict quirky scenarios that could very well be stills or pages plucked from an unknown source. Often they come across as somewhat confounding, as the narrative is not always clear (& nor should it necessarily be). Due to their small scale, they tend to entice the viewer to engage in closer inspection and hopefully ponder their own tale - a theatrical directive in itself.’ (Helen Gibbins – artist)
