ARTISTS / Jeremy Smart

Born 1974, Melbourne

Living and working in Melbourne, Jeremy Smart's work deals with memory and perception. His work is imbued with personal memories or historical narratives that, through their spatial connection to locations, leave emotional traces. It is this visual recollection of history or occurence that is reflected in the photographs.

The works are created using a compositing technique, often layering images of people and places with photographed textures of damaged metallic surfaces. Inspired by the materiality of early photography, including daguerreotypes, the layering technique is employed to create works with a unsettling sensibility.
